Magee, Mississippi is in Simpson County. The first European-American settlers in the area were Arthur Mangum and Philip Magee, who came in 1820. Originally, the community was named Mangum, for Arthur Mangum. However, in 1840, Willis Magee, a relative of Philip Magee, established a grist mill on Little Goodwater Creek, within the current town limits, and the town was renamed for the Magee family in 1859, the year before Magee was incorporated as a village. Magee is situated along US Highway 49, between Jackson and Hattiesburg. Highways 28, 541 and 545 intersect within the city. Nearby communities include Arbo, Coats, Cohay, Gwinville, Maddox, Martinville, Mendenhall, Merit, Mize, Pinola, Sanatorium, Saratoga, and Upton. The state capital of Jackson, Mississippi is about forty-four miles northwest of Magee. Several professional football players, including Kris Mangum, John Mangum, Roland Dale, Edgar Hardy, Charles Williams, Terrill Shaw, Harold Shaw, and Justin Griffith, were born in Magee.
