Pittsboro, Mississippi is a small village in the center of Calhoun County, for which it is the county seat. Mississippi Highway 9 passes through the community, going south six miles to Calhoun City, and north four miles to Bruce. Other nearby communities include Banner, Big Creek, Buckhorn, Vardaman, and Youngs. Tupelo, Mississippi is fifty-three miles northeast of Pittsboro. Dennis Murphree, the 42nd and 47th governor of Mississippi, was born in Pittsboro in 1886, and he died there in 1949. In 1870, Pittsboro had a population of 186. In 2010, its population was 202. Pittsboro’s population peaked at 277 in 1990.
