Other nearby communities include Banner, Big Creek, Buckhorn, Vardaman, and Youngs. Tupelo, Mississippi is fifty-three miles northeast of Pittsboro. Dennis Murphree, the 42nd and 47th governor of Mississippi, was born in Pittsboro in 1886, and he died there in 1949. In 1870, Pittsboro had a population of 186. In 2010, its population was 202.
