Pontotoc, Mississippi is the county seat of Pontotoc County, about twenty miles west of Tupelo, in the northeastern part of the state. Other nearby communities include Algoma, Chesterville, Chiwapa, Ecru, Endville, Hebron, Hurricane, Ingmar, Randolph, Thaxton, and Toccopola. The first Christian marriage on the North American continent is said to have taken place near Pontotoc, between Juan Ortez and Princess Saowana, daughter of the Seminole Chief Uceta, during a visit by the explorer, Hernando de Soto. During the American Civil War, and old house at the crossroad in eastern Pontotoc County, near the Lee County line, was used as a Union hospital during the Battle of Harrisburg, or the Battle of Tupelo. Later, the outlaws, Jesse and Frank James, hid out at this same building.
