Sledge is a small town in northwestern Mississippi. Situated in northeastern Quitman County, a post office was established in Sledge in 1903, and the town was incorporated in 1913. The Yazoo & Mississippi Valley Railroad, which later became the Illinois Central Railroad, came through the area in the 1880s. The African-American country singer, Charley Pride, was born in Sledge. Nearby towns include Falcon, to the southwest, and Crenshaw, to the north, as well as the smaller communities of Ballentine, Birdie, Darling, Gerlach Mill, Pleasant Grove, and Tibbs. Senatobia, Mississippi is about twenty-eight miles to the northeast, and Clarksdale is about thirty miles southwest of Sledge.
