The small city of Bates City is in Lafayette County, Missouri. Bates City was founded by Mr. and Mrs. Theodore and Nancy Bates, for whom it was named, in 1878. The Chicago & Alton Railroad extended its tracks to the area the following year. Each of Bate's nine children received a farm in Bates City from their father and, upon the death of her husband, Mrs. Bates bought five acres from one of her sons in which to begin the Bates City Cemetery, in which Theodore Bates was interred. Bates City is located along US Highway 70, east of Oak Grove and Blue Springs, and west of Odessa.
