The city of Bernie, in Stoddard County, Missouri, was established along the St. Louis Southwestern Railway, and incorporated in 1889. The primary industry for the community was logging, at one time supporting three sawmills in the swamps and woods east of town. Carl Edward Bailey, the 31st governor of Arkansas, was born in Bernie in 1894. Bernie is in southeastern Missouri, south of Dexter and north of Malden.
