The city of Brentwood is a suburb of St. Louis, in St. Louis County, Missouri. It is located just south of the intersection of I-64/US 40 and I-170, surrounded by Clayton, Richmond Heights, Maplewood, Rock Hill, and Ladue. The city’s beginnings were in the 1870s, after Thomas Madden arrived in the area, operating a rock quarry, tavern, barbershop, grocery store, and blacksmith shop. Originally, the town was named for him, known as Maddenville. Located on the Manchester Trail, Maddenville became a busy town in the 1800s, in part because it was connected to St. Louis by a streetcar line. Learning that the nearby town of Maplewood was planning to annex Maddenville, residents decided to incorporate the town as a village, at which time its name was changed to Brentwood. In 1929, Brentwood became a city.
