The city of Cabool is situated at the headwaters of the Big Piney River in Texas County, Missouri, a few miles north of the Mark Twain National Forest. The city is served by US Highways 60 and 63, as well as US Branch Highway 60, which goes directly through the town. Dunn and Mountain Grove is to the west, Bado to the north, Elk Creek to the northeast, and Sargent, Sterling and Willow Springs to the southeast. Founded in 1878, the city was built along the Kansas City, Fort Scott, and Memphis Railway, and incorporated as a town in 1883. The city was named for Kabul, Afghanistan by Ralph Walker, a railroad surveyor who believed the area looked a lot like Kabul, where he had served as a British officer. Prior to that, the town was known as Cedar Bluff.
