Cainsville is a small city in Madison Township, Harrison County, Missouri., bordering the Mercer County line. Founded in 1885, Cainsville was named for Peter Cain, an early settler, although its settlement dates back as far as 1854 or earlier. Along with Isaac Waldrop and Henry Kennedy, Peter Cain build a frame saw and flouring mill on the Thompson Fork of the Grand River, powered by a wooden dam across the river. Since customers often had to wait a long while for grist, a large shed served as sleeping and cooking accommodations, and later a general store not far from the mill site. From 1857 to 1861, he ran a mercantile store with John Bailey. A post office was established for Cainsville in Mercer County in 1857, but moved to Harrison County the following year; at that time. The spelling of the town’s name was changed to Cainesville in 1925, but it later reverted to the original spelling. Cainsville is north of Mount Moriah, northeast of Ridgeway, east of Blythedale and Eagleville, and southwest of Mercer.
