The county seat of Moniteau County, Missouri is the city of California. Originally known as Boonesborough, it was renamed California in 1847 for the California Territory, which was then attracting attention due to the progress of the railroad. California was incorporated in 1848, and the courthouse currently in use was built in 1868. California is concentrated north of US Highway 50, with Branch Highway 50 and Missouri Highway 87 running through the center of town. Clarksburg and Tipton are east of California, while McGirk, Centertown and St. Martins are to the east, Kliever and Jamestown are north, and High Point is to the south.
