Carterville is adjacent to Webb City on the east, and about halfway between Joplin and Carthage. The city is concentrated north and northwest of I-49 and Missouri Highway 171, with Missouri Highway HH going through the center of town. Brooklyn Heights is to the northeast, with Oakland Park to the southwest. The land on which Carterville was built was originally owned by James G.L. Carter in the 1860s, who farmed about two miles northeast of the current town center, while his father, James Carter, originally settled Jasper County in 1841. The town was laid out in 1875, but was little more than a lead mining camp at first, although a commercial center grew up in the town, which was once larger than Webb City.
