The city of Diamond is located southeast of Joplin, in the northern part of Newton County, in southwestern Missouri. Diamond was the birthplace of George Washington Carver. Originally known as Round Grove, and later Center, the community was renamed Diamond when its first post office was established in a back room of the town’s blacksmith shop in 1883. A significant part of the area’s early economy was lead and zinc mining, although farming also played a part. Other nearby communities include Parshley, Berwick, Monark Springs, Tipton Ford, Shoal Creek Estates, and Scotland.
