Exeter is a city and a township in Barry County, in southwestern Missouri. Laid out in 1880, the city was named for the town by that name in Devon, England, probably by early settlers who had built their homes just west of the city’s current location. El Paso, one of the first post offices in Barry County, gave way to the village of Exeter. The community was known as a village in 1880, although it was incorporated as such in 1881. Exeter made a pitch to secure the county seat, but Cassville was named the seat of government for the county in 1845. In 1906, a countywide election was held for the purpose of moving the county seat to Exeter, but Exeter lost, and the county seat remained in Cassville. Exeter was incorporated as a city in 1964. Exeter is located along Missouri Routes 76 and 86, southwest of Cassville, west of Hilltop, northwest of Pasley, north of Wayne, southeast of Ridgley, and west of the Mark Twain National Forest.
