The community was settled by German immigrants in the 1850s, platted in 1903, shortly after the railroad extended its tracks to the area, and incorporated in 1909. The village is located along US Highway 63, east of Koeltztown, south of Rich Fountain, and northwest of Gascondy. Jefferson City is about thirty miles to the northwest.
