Gladstone, in Clay County, is surrounded by the larger Kansas City, Missouri, of which it is a suburb. The community was known as Linden before it was incorporated as Gladstone in 1952. Informally, the community is sometimes known as Happy Rock. Gladstone was named for William Ewart Gladstone, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in the late 1800s, and a supporter of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War.
