The city of Greenfield is the county seat of Dade County, Missouri. Greenfield was founded when the site was selected as the place for the first Dade County courthouse in 1841, and begun on fifty-one acres contributed by Matthias and Mary Ann Allison, early settlers in the area. The majority of its early residents came from Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Carolinas. Its town square was lined with buildings constructed of bricks made in the Greenfield Brickyard in the 1880s, many of which remain today, such as the Opera House, which opened in 1888. Greenfield is located along US Highway 160 and Missouri Highway 39, south and southwest of Stockton Lake. The community of Pilgrim is southeast, while Pennsboro is to the south, and Sylvania is to the northwest.
