The city of Hardin, in Ray County, Missouri, was laid out in 1868, and named for Charles Henry Hardin, the 22nd governor of Missouri. Hardin is located along Missouri Highway J and Highway 10. Russellville and Rockingham are north of Hardin, while Page City is to the southeast.

A volunteer fire department was formed in Hardin, Missouri in 1925, and a rural association was developed in 1952 for the outlying rural area, although the Fire Protection District was created in 1998, allowing for tax support.
