Higginsville is in Lafayette County, Missouri. Situated near the center of the county, Higginsville was founded in 1869, and named for Harvey J. Higgins, who owned the land that the town was built on. Its post office was established in 1870, and the community was incorporated as a town in 1876, and as a city in 1886. The construction of the Alton Railroad through Higginsville gave the city a boost. Higginsville was the site of the Missouri Confederate Soldiers’ Home but after the last of the Confederate veterans died, the land was converted to a Confederate Memorial Cemetery, with the 135-acre site preserving the memory of more than 40,000 Missourians who fought for the Confederacy. Higginsville is located along Missouri Highway 13, and north of Interstate 70. Page City is north of Higginsville, Blackburn is to the east, and Mayview is to the southwest.
