Situated in southern Missouri, the city of Hollister is in Taney County. Settlement of the community goes back to 1867, when Malinda Fortner homesteaded a 120-acre tract of land along the west bank of Turkey Creek. By the 1880s, a crossroads settlement had developed there, and a general store was established by Rueben Kirkham in the early 1900s, and a post office was included in his store by 1904, named for the California birthplace of his daughter. The town’s population expanded when the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern Railroad expanded its tracks to Hollister, and the town became the headquarters for the Mo-Pac Agricultural Agent of the White River Division. Hollister was incorporated as a town in 1910. However, beginning in the 1970s, most of Hollister’s downtown businesses have closed, although the construction of nearby US Highway 65 and the growth of Branson has resulted in some resurgence as new businesses have occupied many of the buildings in Hollister’s downtown district. Hollister is bordered on the north by Lake Taneycomo, the communities of Harbor Village, McGee, and Towercliff, as well as the city of Branson. The College of the Ozarks is southwest of Hollister, at Point Lookout.
