Houston is the county seat of Texas County, Missouri, and the second largest city in the county. Texas County was organized in 1843 as Ashley County, changing its name in 1845 to Texas, in honor of the Republic of Texas. The following year, Houston was laid out as the seat of justice for the county, and named for Sam Houston, the first president of the Texas Republic. Houston is located along US Highway 63, near its intersection with Missouri Route 17. Houston is east of Bucyrus, northwest of Yukon, and northeast of Clara.
