Situated in southwestern St. Louis County, Kirkwood is a 9 square-mile suburb of the City of St. Louis, located along US Highway 61, east of Interstate Highway 270 and north of Interstate Highway 44. St. Louis is northeast of Kirkwood, and surrounding communities include Affton, Keyes Summit, Meacham Park, and Ozark View. Kirkwood was platted in 1852 and established in 1853, named for James P. Kirkwood, the chief engineer of the Missouri Pacific Railroad. A train station, constructed in 1893, is still in use as the only Amtrak station stop in the St. Louis metropolitan area outside of the city itself, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
