The village of Leawood is located in Shoal Creek Township, in north-central Newton County, southwestern Missouri. The boundaries of the village are disjointed, sharing several boundaries with the city of Joplin, including an area that was previously known as Silver Creek, as well as with Saginaw. Major roads serving the village include Interstate Highway 44 to the north, River Road to the south, Hearnes Boulevard to the west, and Range Line Road to the east. Leawood was incorporated in 1956, largely as a means of retaining its rural character. However, in 1999, the village relinquished a portion of its jurisdiction, the Wildwood subdivision, to Joplin. Despite being surrounded by larger population centers, a good portion of the village is agricultural.
