Linn is the county seat of Osage County, Missouri. The community was platted in 1843, and named for Senator Lewis F. Linn, who served in the senate from 1833 to 1843. Originally named Linnville, the community was incorporated as a village under that name in 1899, shortening its name in 1911 when it became a fourth-class city. Linn is situated along US Highway 50, east of Loose Creek, west of Potts, and south of Luystown.
