Situated along the Mississippi River in northeastern Missouri, the city of Louisiana is in Pike County. Louisiana is south of Hannibal, at the junction of Missouri Route 79 and US Highway 54, at the Illinois border. Louisiana was founded in 1817 by John Walter Basye and named for his daughter, Louisiana Basye. Samuel Caldwell and Joel Shaw were other notable early residents, having purchased property from Bayse. In its early years Basye was a significant shipping point along the Mississippi, and several of the city’s antebellum homes are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, along with Clarksville and Hannibal, Louisiana is part of the 50 Miles of Art corridor, and home to several artists, craftspeople, and artisans.
