New Haven, in Franklin County, Missouri, was founded in 1836 as a riverboat landing on the Missouri River known as Miller’s Landing, for Phillip Miller, who operated a wood yard on the river, which fueled the steamboat industry. The Union Pacific Railroad extended its track to the area in the 1850s, and the town’s name was changed to New Haven in 1856, intended to highlight the changing economy of the community. New Haven is situated along the southwestern banks of the Missouri River, and accessed through Missouri Route 100, which passes through town. Nearby communities include Berger, Campbellton, Detmold, Dissen, Etlah, Lyon, and Washington.
