Originally named Sylvania when it was first settled around 1840, and surveyed in 1869, the city of Oran is in Scott County, in southeastern Missouri. In 1870, it was renamed St. Cloud, but it was renamed again in 1882, when a new plat was filed with the state, this time as Oran, a name that was chosen by a returning sea captain, Ward L. Smith, who had spent time in Oran, Algeria, Africa during the Crimean War. Largely agricultural, the town was known for its apple and peach orchards in its early days. Missouri Highway 77 passes through the eastern portion of the city, while Route W passes through town. Oran is west of Benton and Lambert, northwest of Morley, south of Caney Creek, southeast of Randles, and east of Perkins.
