Otterville is a city and a township in Cooper County, in central Missouri. Laid out in 1837, the city and township were named for a creek that once had large numbers of otters. Otterville is situated along Missouri Route A, which is also known as Old Route 50, as well as Missouri Route BB. West of Otterville is Smithton, while Syracuse is to the east, and New Lebanon is northeast.

Constructed during the winter of 1861-1862, the Civil War fortification consists of two lines of trenches, each about a quarter mile long, that meet at right angles at a crossing that is now known as Game Drive. Built as a defense against enemy attack, it is believed that it was used only until the first couple of months of 1862.
