The St. Louis suburb of Pagedale was originally farmlands that were subdivided in the mid-19th century when Page Avenue was extended from the City of St. Louis to the current location of Pagedale, largely to provide access to the St. Vincent Mental Hospital, north of St. Charles Rock Road. Just south of Pagedale was Hazel Hill, a community that is now part of Pagedale. Another community, once known as Engelholm Gardens, was also absorbed by Pagedale, which was incorporated as a fourth-class city in 1950. Surrounding communities include Bel-Nor, Greendale, Hanley Hills, Hillsdale, Velda Village, Velda Village Hills, and Wellston. St. Louis is about nine miles southeast of Pagedale.
