The city of Park Hills, in St. Francois County, Missouri, was formed from a 1994 merger of Flat River, Elvins, Esther, and Rivermines, while the formerly incorporated village of Fairview Acres had merged with Flat River in 1983. Park Hills is six miles east of Irondale, thirteen miles east of Belgrade, adjacent to St. Joe State Park, and near the state parks of St. Francois, Hawn, Elephant Rocks, Johnson’s Shut-Ins, Taum Sauk Mountain, and Washington. Park Hills is home to Mineral Area College, previously known as Flat River Junior College. The city is in the Old Lead Belt, which was once a large lead mining district. The former Major League Baseball players, Tom and Bill Upton, were born in what was then Esther, Missouri.
