With a population of under a thousand, Pleasant Hope, Missouri is a small city in Polk County. Missouri Route H passes through the city, just north of Missouri Route 215. The town of Goodnight is immediately adjacent to Pleasant Hope, on the southeast, and Brighton is west of the city. Springfield is just over twenty-four miles south of Pleasant Hope. The community was settled in the mid 1800s, just prior to the American Civil War. Its first school was the Pleasant Hope Academy, which operated from 1849 to 1855, and the Pleasant Hope Normal Academy, organized in 1883, was its first permanent school, now operating as the Pleasant Hope School District.
