Although incorporated as a city, Prairie Home, Missouri has a population of under three hundred people. The community was laid out in 1874 around the Prairie Home Institute, a school that was already in operation, and named for its setting on the prairies of Cooper County. The town’s founder is J.W. Boswell, who built a store there, along the stagecoach route from Boonville to Jefferson City in 1857, a building that still exists. The small city is located along Missouri Route 87, near its intersection with Route J. Prairie Home is located in central Missouri, southwest of the Missouri River. The town of Pisgah is southwest of Prairie Home, while Jamestown is southeast, Lupus is northeast, and Clarks Fork is northwest. The larger city of Columbia is about thirty-one miles northeast of Prairie Home.
