With a population of just over a thousand people, Princeton is the county seat and largest city in Mercer County, Missouri. Princeton was named for the Revolutionary War Battle of Princeton, and was designated the seat of government for the county in 1845. One famous native of the city was Martha Jane Canary, who was better known as Calamity Jane, an American frontierswoman and scout, who was born in Princeton in 1852. Located in north-central Missouri, Princeton is concentrated just west of the intersection of US Highways 65 and 136. Nearby communities include Goshen, Ravanna, Mill Grove, Cainsville, and Mercer. The Iowa state line is north of the city.
