Rock Port is the county seat of Atchison County, Missouri. Situated in the northwestern part of the state, along the Loess Hills bluffs above the Missouri River, the town was named for Rock Creek, which flows through it, although it was initially named Linden. Although Atchison County was annexed to Missouri in 1837, its northern boundary was in dispute until 1851. Settled in 1839, the original town site is located off of Interstate Highway 29, although another downtown area was developed that features truck stops, motels, fast food, and fire stands, located nearer the interstate. Largely self sufficient in its energy development, in 2008, the city claimed that one hundred percent of its electricity was generated by wind power supplied by the Loess Hills Wind Farm. Rockport is separated from Phelps City by the interstate, to the west. Langdon is southwest, Fairfax is southeast, and Linden is north of Rock Port.
