St. Ann, Missouri is an inner-ring suburb of the city of St. Louis, named for Saint Ann, the mother of the Virgin Mary. The city was founded in 1938, and incorporated in 1948. The community was developed as a housing project for families of workers employed in nearby defense plants by Charles F. Vatterott, and is one of only a few defense housing projects to evolve into a permanent town. St. Ann is situated in north-central St. Louis County, next to St. Charles Rock Road, Lindbergh Boulevard, and Interstate Highway 70, and it borders the Lambert-St. Louis International Airport and the communities of Bridgeton, Breckenridge Hills, Edmundson, Overland, and Woodson Terrace, as well as a large unincorporated area that lies between Maryland Heights and Creve Coeur. The city has expanded through annexations several times since the 1950s.
