St. Clair, Missouri is a small city of just over three square miles along Interstate Highway 44, between St. Louis and Rolla. Founded in 1859, the Franklin County community was originally known as Travelers Repose. Its founder, William Kerr, settled in the area in 1854, establishing a store in 1858, although the first settler in the area was B.J. Luge, who came in 1849. The name of the town was changed to St. Clair, in honor of a railroad engineer, after the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad came through the area. St. Clair was incorporated as a city in 1882. St. Clair is situated along Historic Route 66. The city is concentrated on a ridge running from the southwest to the northeast, along the railroad right of way. Other nearby communities include Union, Washington, and Sullivan.
