Shell Knob is an unincorporated community in White River Township, Barry County, as well as Alpine Township, Stone County, Missouri. The Ozark Mountain town was formed on the banks of the White River in 1835, when Henry and Elizabeth Yoachum Schell established a trading post there. Initially named Schell Knob, for the Schells, the ā€œcā€ was accidentally left off of the name when the post office was established in 1872. The Schells later moved, and established the town of Jacket, Missouri. Table Rock Dam was constructed in 1959, forming Table Rock Lake, transforming the area into a resort community. In the 1970s, a new highway was built, bypassing the town and leaving Old Shell Knob on the side. Shell Knob is situated in the Mark Twain National Forest, southeast of Hill City and northwest of Viola.
