The city of Smithville, Missouri is situated along the Little Platte River in both Clay and Platte counties. Originally known as Smith’s Mill, the town was named for Humphrey and Nancy Smith, who settled in the area in 1822, opening the first water-powered mill in Clay County. The town was laid out in the 1830s, and incorporated in 1867. In 1979, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers enlarged Smithville Lake, creating a 7,200 acre body of water with one hundred and seventy-five miles of shoreline, which offers recreational opportunities and supplies water to the area. Smithville is located on the southwest corner of the lake, across the water from Paradise. Trimble is north, Ridgely is northwest, Kerrville is west, and Winner is southeast of the city.
