Union Star is a small city located along the Third Fork of the Platte River in DeKalb County, Missouri. It is the only incorporated municipality in the United States with that name, although there is an unincorporated community in Kentucky named Union Star. Settled in the mid-1800s, the community was originally named Third Forks, whose post office was established in 1863. Shortly after the Civil War, a star route was laid out from St. Joseph, and the Third Forks post office was renamed Union Star. The original town included eleven blocks, extending from the railroad to the Methodist church west, to the highway north, and the Locust Street south. The city is situated along US Highway 169, which becomes Walnut Street within the city limits. Surrounding or nearby communities include Empire Prairie, Flag Springs, Helena, King City, Oak, Orchid, Rochester, Whitesville, and Winslow. St. Joseph is twenty-seven miles to the southwest.
