Situated in northern Missouri, the city of Unionville is the county seat of Putnam County. The community was named Harmony when it was first established as the seat of government for the county in 1853, so named because prior to its selection, the county seat had moved several times, often with heated debates, so the hope was to bring harmony among everyone concerned. The city is located along US Highway 136, which serves as Unionville’s Main Street within the city limits, and Missouri Highway 5. Lake McKinley is in western Unionville, and Lake Thunderhead is northwest of the city. Neighboring communities and towns include Elko, Hartford, Lemons, Mendota, St. John, and Terre Haute.
