Often known as U City, University City is one of the oldest suburbs of the City of St. Louis, having been a streetcar suburb in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city was founded by Edward Gardner Lewis, a publisher, who developed the location around his publishing complex for Woman’s Magazine and Woman’s Farm Journal in 1903. The building currently serving as City Hall was built by Lewis for his magazine enterprise. When the city was incorporated in 1906, Lewis served as mayor. Surrounding communities include Clayton, Hanley Hills, Hillsdale, Pagedale, Richmond Heights, Velda Village, and Wellston. St. Louis is about eight miles to the southeast.
