Urbana is a small city in Dallas County, Missouri. The community was founded by settlers who came from Urbana, Illinois, for which the town was eventually named. Originally, the community was named Andersonville, after a Dr. Andrews who lived there for several years, although it is unclear why it was named Andersonville rather than Andrewsville. Nevertheless, Dr. Andrews was a pioneer doctor who lived in Urbana, and the story of the town’s name is recorded in the history of the county. A post office was established there as Andersonville in 1856, and its name was changed to Urbana in 1867. A fire destroyed a large portion of the city in 1917. The city is accessed primarily through US Highway 65 (Dallas Street), which intersects Missouri Highway D (Broadway Street) in Urbana. Surrounding communities include Huckaby, Louisburg, Nemo, Pittsburg, Preston, and Tunas. Springfield is fifty miles south of Urbana.
