Versailles, Missouri has been the county seat of Morgan County since 1854, and the Missouri Pacific Railroad extended its tracks to the area in 1858. The area was settled by large numbers of Swiss and German immigrants, many of whom were Mennonites, in the late 1800s, and they remain prominent in the region. James “Bud” Walton, brother of Sam Walton and co-founder of Walmart, opened his first store in Versailles. Joseph Franklin Rutherford, the second president of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania and founder of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, was born in Versailles. Surrounding communities include Excelsior, Fortuna, Glensted, Marvin, and Stover. The Lake of the Ozarks lies south of Versailles, and Jefferson City is fifty miles to the northeast.
