Named for the capital of Austria, the city of Vienna, Missouri was created to become the county seat of Maries County in 1855, its first post office being established in 1856. The city is accessed by US Highway 63, which becomes Pine Street within the city limits, and by Missouri Highway 42, which is also known as 5th Street. Surrounding communities include Argyle, Bend, Brinktown, Freeburg, Gascondy, Hayden, Lanes Prairie, Paydown, Summerfield, and Van Cleve. Jefferson City is forty miles north-northwest.
