Wayland is situated in northeastern Missouri, near the Iowa and Illinois borders. Laid out in 1880, Wayland was named for Jerre Wayland, an early settler. The city is accessed by US Highway 61, which is also Missouri Highway 27, and US Highway 136, which passes through the center of town. Nearby communities include Antioch, Kahoka, Keoka, St. Francisville, and Winchester.
