Not to be confused with the village of Weatherby in DeKalb County, the city of Weatherby Lake is an inner-ring suburb of Kansas City, located in Platte County. The city was formed as a private development at what was then known as Rush Creek Valley in 1922, and was originally called the Lakeview Subdivision of Kansas City. The community was incorporated as a separate municipality in 1959, changing its status from that of a village to a fourth-class city in 1962. Bordering Kansas City on the north, The city was named for the 274-acre lake that was created in 1937, and which is the centerpiece of the city, offering a variety of recreational opportunities, including swimming, sailing and fishing. Other surrounding communities include Gladstone, Houston Lake, Northmoor, Oakwood Park, Parkville, Perrelview, Riverside, and Waldron.

Named for Brandon McPherson, an Eagle Scout from Weatherby Lake, Missouri who died in an automobile accident at the age of sixteen. Established by his family and friends, the foundation awards scholarships to Eagle Scouts and local athletes, teaching grants, and financial assistance for area schools. Dedicated to Brandon McPherson, an Eagle Scout who started this nature trail as part of his Eagle service project, which was completed by his family after his death in an automobile accident. Maintained by the Brandon McPherson Memorial Foundation, the trail is located in Christhaven Park on the south end of Roberts Road in Weatherby Lake, Missouri.
