Located about thirty-five miles east of Kansas City, Wellington is in Lafayette County, Missouri, overlooking the Missouri River. Wellington is just a few miles east of Napoleon, and the two towns were named after the commanders of the Battle of Waterloo, as halfway between the two towns is an unincorporated community named Waterloo. Lexington is northeast of Wellington, and Camden is across the river and north of the city. The larger city of Independence is about twenty-six miles to the west. Settlement of the area began in the early 1820s, although the town was officially platted in 1837.
