Also known as Woods Heights, the city of Wood Heights, Missouri is in Ray County. The town was named for Robert “Woodson” Hite, a cousin to Jesse James. Robert Hite, who was commonly known as Wood Hite, rode with Bloody Bill Anderson during the Kansas-Missouri border dispute, and later became part of the James Gang. He was shot and killed by Robert Ford, who later killed Jesse James. The city is located along Missouri Highway 10, near its intersection with Highway O. Wood Heights is just east of Excelsior Springs, and southeast of Crystal Lakes and Homestead. Kansas City is about thirty miles to the southwest. Although Wood Heights is an incorporated fourth-class city, its residents and businesses use the Excelsior Springs zip code, and many use Excelsior Springs as their mailing address.
