Belgrade is the largest city in Montana that is not a county seat. Belgrade was founded by Thomas B. Quaw in 1882, along the newly surveyed Northern Pacific Railroad right-of-way, about ten miles west of Bozeman. The town was named for the Serbian capital, in recognition for Serbian investors who helped to finance part of the Great Northern Railroad project. Belgrade was incorporated in 1906. Although largely in the shadow of Bozeman, Belgrade is Montana’s eleventh largest city. The Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport is adjacent to the Belgrade city limits.
