Boulder, Montana is the county seat of Jefferson County. The town is located on the north bank of the Boulder River, between Butte and Helena, at the intersection of I-15 and State Highway 69. Corbin and Clancy are northeast of Boulder, Basin is to the west, and Butte is to the southwest. Boulder is nearly surrounded by the Helena National Forest. The town was founded as Boulder Valley, serving as a stagecoach station during the 1860s, and grew into a regional trade center. The Great Northern Railway constructed a branch line through Boulder in 1888, and state schools for the deaf, the blind, and the developmentally disabled were established there in 1892. Its name was shortened to Boulder in 1897. Three Boulder buildings are listed with the National Register of Historic Places: the Jefferson County Courthouse, the Montana Deaf and Dumb Asylum, and the Boulder Hot Springs Hotel.
