Conrad, Montana is the seat of government for Pondera County. Conrad is situated near the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountain Front, as well as Great Falls, Brady, Choteau, Cut Bank, Dupuyer, Heart Butte, Ledger, and Valier. The city is largely agricultural, including several nearby Hutterite communities. The Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex is west of Conrad, offering 1.5 million acres of primitive backcountry. The town is at the half-way mark of the old Whoop-Up trail that ran from Fort Benton to Lethbridge, in Alberta, Canada. The Great Falls & Canada Railway built a narrow gauge line along the Whoop-Up and, later, the Great Northern Railroad bought the company and replaced the tracks with a standard gauge.
